What parents should know about Tik Tok.

TikTok is a video-sharing social media app available on iOS and Android.  Users can create, share and view user crated videos.  This is similar to Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat.

What’s the appeal?  Users can record and upload bit-sized looping videos of themselves lip-syncing and dancing to popular music or soundbites.  Videos can be enhanced with filters, emojis and stickers.  They are often made for comedic effect.  TikTok has been designed with the young user in mind and as a very addictive appeal source.

Tik Tok is rated 12+ on the Apple app store and “teen maturity” on Google Play. There is no system in place to verify a user's age, so anyone can download this app.  There is a risk that children may be exposed to music that contains explicit language and content.

Snippets of what learning looks like

Students at work.

First Technology Class for the year

Kia ora koutou these are photos of the first class for the year at Linwood College Technology  Centre in Phillipstown taken 13 February.
Students were 'buzzing' after their first tech experience. The bus ride was even more fun as friends caught up with each other and new students in groups across Ata Hapara and Tangaroa became familiar with each other.

Featured Post - Stevie-Lee - Surfing

SURFING.

I went surfing on Wednesday with Mr Redmond, Melissa and a few other kids.

There weren't too many waves but they were big enough to surf on.
It was a lot of fun Meliki (aka. Puffy hair.) and me (aka. LaTiNaAaAa.) were together catching the faces of the waves, while the rest of the group were catching the white wash. This was Meliki’s first time and this was like my 100th time. Meliki was laying down when she caught the waves and I was standing up. The falls some of the kids took were hilarious. It was Abe who nose dived his board fins hit me in the head. Then there was me who did a scorpio when I fell. (if you don't know what a human scorpio looks like well now you know… IT HURT.

At the end of surfing it took me FOREVER to take off my wetsuit.

2020, Bring it on

Kia ora ki a tātou,

It has been really amazing getting to know all our amazing new students, as well as reconnecting with our returning tuakana.

So far our students have been making progress in the swimming pool with their daily lessons.  Well done team, great to see you growing this essential skills.

Our non-swimmers have also been growing their physical skills, communication skills and confidence through dance.  What a way to start the year.

Wednesday and Friday mornings groups of Seniors can be spotted beachside improving their surf skills.  We have strong interest in this and it has been good to see both experienced and brand new students out on the surf.

Technology starts this Thursday and we will be heading off to Linwood tech Centre in Nursery Road for a double helping of tech.  We are very lucky to have this double session to lots of fun, extra learning happening.

There are going to be some amazing opportunities for our seniors to show off their leadership skills this year so watch this space!

My first week of being a year 8 - Featured Post

Last Tuesday school had officially started. It was also my first full day of being a year 8. We didn't really do much work on the first day. The rest of the week we just played games and we are learning how to link writing. I have also made a few friends, Zara she is really nice and funny and the other friends name is Violet she is really nice and pretty.

Today we have done maths, writing, literacy and a few more things. I have lots of my friends in my class that I have known for a while. It has been a pretty fun day. I have also got to play dodge ball today at break time that was also very fun.

The year 8's have leadership teams that we can apply for but we have to make a little CV about it if we want to do it. Me and my friends are applying for an events team, which includes sorting out assembly's, discos and a bit more.
