Ideal bookshelf - Thursday Challenge

LEARN: At these copies of Ideal Bookshelf by the book-loving artist Jane Mount. Then watch this video of Jane painting one of her Ideal Bookshelf paintings (https://youtu.be/juc7rIBDnpU).
TALK: Which books would be on your ideal bookshelf? Jane only lets you choose a top 10 (maybe 15 if they are skinny). Interview the people in your bubble and get them to choose theirs.
CREATE: Create your ideal bookshelf either by painting, photography, Google drawing or actual drawing.
Look up the books you have chosen for your picture on the internet (or gather them together if you have copies at home). Now arrange them so they look perfect. What order will they need to be in? Colour? Theme? Symbol? Ranking? Now get to work.
Can you create ideal bookshelves for other members of your bubble too?

Kahoot- The Great Tangaroa Escape


Kia ora koutou, how are you all? Remember to take breaks away from your device. A new challenge for our studio. We'll see how this goes. We're looking at Kahoot to reinforce learning with some fun as well.


First step is to do an individual challenge online(this weekend) and then we'll see how that goes and then a whole class Kahoot online sometime next week. Ready?

The Great ANZAC Weekend Family Paper Plane Race - Friday's Challenge for the long weekend.

LEARN: How to fold 5 incredible paper planes. This video is a bit longer than usual but it is well worth it for the activity it inspires!


TALK: What plane do you think is the most exciting or interesting? What one do you think does the best tricks? What happens in a competition? What about a competition for stunt planes? How could you judge them?
CREATE: Create your own stunt plane competition. Follow the instructions in the video to create the 5 different paper planes. OR use your own design. MAYBE challenge your family members to make a plane also. Allocate a panel of judges (try and include family members if they are free), choosing a scoring system and categories to judge them off - these could be height, flips, distance, etc. Hold your competition and find out the winner.

Te Reo Made Easy - Thursday's Daily Challenge


LEARN: Check out the 140 words on the cards in the Tinycards stack linked below. They are the first nine weeks of words from the amazing Māori Made Easy textbook. If you are a bubble who has fluency in the Reo you can obviously take your vocabulary list up a notch.
TALK: There are 140 words in the Tinycard stack. How much Reo have you heard in your bubble? Interview each of your bubble members - how many of the 140 words do they think they know the Reo Pakeha (English) version of? What do you think about practice? Can you learn anything if you practice it enough?
DO: Use the Tinycards website (or download the app) to work through the lessons. Each lesson is specially designed to help you remember the thing you are learning. Can you practice enough to get all 140 words right? Do you think Tinycards is a good way to learn or would you rather learn these words a different way?

The Best Lollies in the Dairy - Wednesday's Daily Challenge

Still stuck on a food theme!!!

Have you been to the dairy lately? Have you bought yourself a lolly mix? What lollies are you excited to get? What lollies do you give away?

LEARN: Read The Spinoff's 'Every dairy lolly in New Zealand reviewed and ranked'. You can find the article here https://thespinoff.co.nz/food/14-02-2020/every-dairy-lolly-in-new-zealand-reviewed-and-ranked/

TALK: Find grown-ups (preferably older ones) inside or outside your bubble that you can talk to. Use the Spinoff list as inspiration for lolly based interviews with your people. What are the lollies the grown-ups in your bubble remember from when they were kids? Ask the grown-ups what a 10cent mixture was? Talk with the grown-ups about where they bought their lollies.
CREATE: Get your grown-ups to rank their favourite lollies. Now interview all the kids in your bubble about their favourite lollies. You could create a google form with a drop down option to help you rank your top twenty. Create your own - 'Top Twenty Lolly List' as endorsed by your bubble. Illustrate your list - you can be in spired by this amazing drawing by Toby Morris.

Bubble Food Truck - Tuesday's Daily Blog Challenge

These daily challenges are optional extras, fun activities that you can work on at home.  Some of you did the blog challenges during the holidays, and these will be similar.

LEARN: Look at the different food truck designs below.
TALK: If your bubble had to open a food truck together what type of food would you sell? Who would do the cooking? Who would do the serving? Who would be in charge of the money? Who would be the boss?
CREATE: Design a food truck for your latest bubble business. You can only sell one type of food - tacos or burgers or ice cream or cakes or chips or sandwiches, etc, BUT you'll need to invent a menu that has four different variations of the food you choose. What type of truck/caravan/trailer will you choose? Create a design for your food truck - how will it look when it is closed? What about when it is open. What will its logo be? What will the aprons look like?

Blog Challenge #10 Dad jokes - The last Blog challenge before the term work starts next Wednesday. Let's have a laugh!


LEARN: Follow this link - Nice one Dad (watch/ click through the screens). TALK: What's your best joke? What's your dad's best joke? What's your bubble's best joke? Call some people up and ask them for their best joke? Ask your bubble grown-ups to ask their Facebook friends for their best jokes.
CREATE: Now you have a lot of jokes. Make a survey where you get people to rate all of your jokes out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ so you can find the best one. Now take the best ones and make a joke book for your bubble. Paper or digital. Remember that in a joke book you can't have the answer to the joke next to the joke. So maybe make a little fold-over corner or something so you can hide the answer for each joke. SHARE: Share on your blog.

Blog Challenge #9 - origami challenge!

LEARN: Make a 3 minute origami butterfly

TALK: What skills are needed to do origami? What do you think origami means? Do you think origami is hard to do or easy? Why do you think people came up with origami? What is the purpose?
CREATE: Make an origami butterfly.
Follow the instructions on the video to create an origami butterfly, think about the different skills you will need to do it well. Was it easy or difficult? Go even further and find another origami animal to fold.

Blog Challenge #8 - In case you were missing Zumba...

WATCH: The Taro Boyz Aiga and their Day 9 Isolation At Home Exercise to Sau Ta O by Fia Fia Band.
TALK: Ask the grown ups in your bubble what they had to do for PE when they were at school. Did the boys do exactly the same as the girls? Did they like PE or did they hate it? Ask them to tell you a story about PE - a triumph, what they had to wear or a perhaps even a time they gave an excuse to get out of doing it? Do any of the grown ups know what Jump Jam is? Or Go Noodle? Can you show them?
DO: Play the video again and see if you can keep up. Can you do all of the moves?

Blog Challenge #7 Growing in isolation

TALK: About what's for dinner tonight. Are there any of the following vegetables or herbs in your fridge? 1. Ginger, 2. Green onion, 3. Garlic, 4. Potatoes, 5. Carrot tops, 6. Lettuce, 7. Leeks 8. Celery 9. Basil, 10. Mint, 11. Rosemary, 12. Oregano, 13. Sage, and 14. Thyme. (because these are the best to grow).
CREATE: Grow and observe a vegetable.
Because we are all home for a while, we've got time to really watch, care for and observe something up close as it grows. Start early, make caring for your vegetable a part of your everyday.

Blog Challenge #6 - Experts in...?

LEARN: How to make a Little Book of....



TALK: Everybody is an expert at knowing something. What are the people in your bubble experts at? Do they know lots about 🧚‍♂️or 🦕 or 🦄 or 🌳 or 🎂 or or 🚂 or 🎹? Make a list of everyone's names and then write 'expert at __________' after their name. Fill in the blanks so maybe 'Hazel expert at flowers' or 'Olive - expert a donuts flavours'.
CREATE: Download and print out the Foldable Book Template at https://wp.me/p405LX-449. Follow the instructions to make your book and label it with your expert field. Then fill the pages with drawings or words of your expert knowledge.

William Pike Challenge: Passion Projects

The following criteria is what is needed for your passion project, you have been sent the invite via school email, logon and add your project online. Read what is required.

REQUIREMENTS

WHY DO PASSION PROJECTS?

Passion Projects are a wonderfully engaging element of the William Pike Challenge. They allow young people to explore their interests, set goals and work hard to achieve them! This does wonders for their confidence, pride and self-esteem levels.

WHAT IS A PASSION PROJECT?

We class Passion Projects as a skill, hobby or sport that is totally new to a student. This is their chance to think outside of the box and have some fun!

PASSION PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

Students need to complete 20 hours of Passion Projects. They can choose one or more Passion Project to master and are usually done in their own time or you can timetable this into options time at school.

WHAT IS SO GREAT ABOUT PASSION PROJECTS?

The objective of Passion Projects is to develop student's ability to build and master a new skill. Learning something new can empower our youth, grow their confidence and help them practise universal life skills. Since Passion Projects are something that's totally new to the student, doing them encourages them to take on a challenge and working hard to master it develops determination, concentration and resilience.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE 21ST-CENTURY SKILLS THAT ARE DEVELOPED WITH PASSION PROJECTS?

  • Emotional resilience, perseverance and commitment.
  • Self-belief and a good work ethic.
  • Planning, preparation and organisational skills.
  • Accountability, critical thinking and collaborative problem solving.
  • An awareness of what’s on offer in their community.

Blog Challenge #6 - Find out about Sharks


LEARN: Why are sharks so awesome?
TALK: Has anyone in your bubble ever seen a real live shark? Make a list of all the excellent shark special advantage bits that this video talks about - the teeth, the blood, the skin etc.
CREATE: You are a shark scientist who needs to observe sharks in their habitat. Find a whole heap of shark videos online. Here's one good source. Create a shark video library. Now pause your best shark video on an excellent moment and take a screen shot ( if you know how). Make a scientist like diagram where you draw arrows to all the shark bits from your list.
SHARE: Explain them on your diagram so other people in your bubble can learn a bit more about sharks.
