Scientists on show

Today it was exciting to welcome parents into the school to show off the achieve that has been happening across the school this term. In Tangaroa we had rockets, solar ovens, put put boats, kahoots, debates, power points, scientific discussions and displays. It was fantastic to hear about what everyone had  been learning about.

A Frosty Morning

As I step out of the toasty warm car I feel the frosty temperature nip my nose. It’s cold enough to freeze a rat inside and out. I make my way up to the front gate and walk up the swirvy path, since the year seven and eight class is at the end of the big buildings I make a quick short cut between the kindergarten and the pool.

As I walk upon the frosty-glazed grass I hear it crunch beneath my feet.  The sound is somehow satisfying. I look down and see distinctly how the frost defines the skeleton of a leaf unlike on a humid summer morning.

The school is quiet but will be buzzing in the next half hour. I slowly approach my big classroom and ignore taking my shoes off because I will probably get hypothermia in under two minutes. I step into the class and the warmth envelops me like a warm blanket, I am glad I made it into the warm classroom.

How to make power out of petrol

How to make power out of petrol

Do you know how to make power out of petrol?  Do you know how a car engine works?  Do you know what a car engine is?  Do you know what petrol is?

Fossil fuels are made from hydrocarbons: the molecules inside consist mostly of carbon and hydrogen and coal can also contain hydrocarbons.
When the hydrocarbons burn in the air their molecules can split apart.
The carbon and hydrogen combine with the air.  It then makes gas and water then the energy that holds the molecules together released as heat. This process is called combustion, it releases a huge lot of energy into the world.

Why do we still use gasoline? Well we use gasoline because they they pack more energy into each litre you use. Gasoline makes your motor sound better
And makes it lighter for big heavy trucks going over hills and bridges.

The way a motor works is the pistons inside the motor move up and down. To make the pistons go down you need petrol because when the petrol is in the motor it explodes and makes the pistons go down. At the bottom of the cylinders, the pistons are attached to an axle.   This is called a crankshaft that then powers the car.

Recount of Winter Sport

      Recount of winter sport.

Now the first part of this story is [what we/I do.] I do soccer for winter sport because it is my favourite sport. Before I came to this school I wasn’t a sporty person but now I am. Friday was the first time I have ever played a real game and I’m really proud of myself. Now overall it was one the funnest times I have ever had this year.

Now I am talking about my uniform and some other stuff. My uniform is a black and white uniform, the black is on the right shoulder and goes down on an angle and the rest is white. Now for the warm ups the white team was in sort of a line and we were kicking the the ball to each other then going to the back of the other line.

On the first half I played right wing defender and Maraea and Alex played defender with me. Now I reckon that I did pretty well for my first time playing and yes I did get hurt. A lot.

On the second half I played defender again and I did a lot better than on the first half. I did a lot more tackling than on the first half. I was very happy with myself.

3D printing

I have been working to try a make a box so children can put teeth that have fallen out somewhere safe.

I have been using the 3D printer and a programme called Tinkercad to design and build our boxes.

The first box I printed didn't go so well because, when we printed it, the lid sat on the hinges.

The second box went well because we fixed the hinges but when we printed it, the lid was sealed to the box because I didn't take the lid off the box when I went to print.

My third box did go well because when we printed it, the lid fit on the box and you could put a stick through the hinges so the lid opened and closed.

I need to make the next box a bit smaller.

Hockey

Winter sports has started and I'm on the year 7/8 hockey team.

Last week we played south and we lost, 8-1.  We are just a new team and they were more experienced than us.  I scored the one goal.

The thing that our team did well was passing.  Next game we need to work on staying in positions, for example sometimes people would push a bit wide.

Hannah, who is charge of all the sport, is going to change the time of the games so I can referee some of the year 5/6 games because there aren't enough referees.  I help out the junior team.  They are really good.

I also play outside of school for Marist Hockey.   I have played for three years.  I like playing because  it is a running game and you get to score goals - and get chocolate afterwards!
